MABON: THRESHOLD—Equal Night
There is a moment today when the Sun crosses the celestial equator and autumn officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere.
The equinox.
The word comes from the Latin for equal night, though day and night are not perfectly equal everywhere on Earth. Still, the meaning holds. For one brief turning of the wheel, light and darkness stand nearly opposite one another before darkness begins its long seasonal ascent.
Mabon brings us to the threshold.
And thresholds are interesting places.
A threshold is not quite the room we are leaving, and not yet the room we are entering. It is the doorway between them.
We cross thresholds constantly. Seasons change. Relationships change. Bodies change. Careers end and new lives begin. Sometimes we choose the crossing. Sometimes life simply moves beneath our feet and we discover we are already standing somewhere new.
We tend to think we should move through these places quickly. Decide. Resolve. Get our footing.
But there is wisdom in lingering at the doorway.
The equinox does not ask us to choose between light and darkness. It holds both.
That may be the deeper lesson of Mabon.
Balance Is a Verb
We often imagine balance as a perfectly level scale: everything divided neatly, everything receiving its proper share.
Real life rarely works that way.
Some days work needs more of us. Other days the body does. Sometimes we need company; sometimes solitude. There are seasons for producing and seasons for resting, seasons for holding on and seasons for letting go.
Balance is not keeping everything equal.
It is noticing what this moment requires and adjusting accordingly.
Tonight the Sun enters Libra, the sign of the scales, making the symbolism almost impossible to miss. But even the scales move before they settle. Equilibrium is not stillness. It is an ongoing conversation between opposing forces.
Perhaps that is why the equinox lasts only a moment.
We are not meant to stay there.
Simplicity Living Practice: Equinox Ritual
Tonight, create a small equinox ritual with two candles.
One candle represents the light: what is visible, growing, active, known. The other represents the darkness: what is resting, hidden, unfinished, mysterious.
Black is traditionally associated with protection, mystery, release, and the unseen, making it a beautiful color to bring to your altar tonight.
Light both candles and sit between them for a few minutes. You do not need to make anything happen. You do not need to banish the darkness or cling to the light.
Simply notice them both.
Then ask yourself: Where in my life am I trying to force balance instead of allowing it to move?
Let the answer come—or not.
Sometimes the work of the threshold is simply standing there long enough to notice that you have arrived.
Sage Wisdom
Balance is not a place we arrive.
It is a relationship we keep negotiating.
The wheel turns. The light changes. We change with it.
And perhaps wisdom is not learning how to keep everything perfectly balanced, but learning how to move gracefully when the scales begin to shift.
